Seed Potatoes
This years seed potatoes are now on display.
We have 14 different varieties to choose from.
We have –
Earlies –
Duke of York - Duke of York has legendary flavour as a firm early scraper but it also matures gracefully to a well-flavoured, general purpose, slightly floury potato.
Red Duke of York – Duke of York intensified! Wonderful strong flavour, general purpose but best fried, roasted or mashed. Makes great chips.
Home Guard - General-purpose potato that is at its best for boiling very early in the season.
Epicure – Legendary flavour with floury texture.
Pentland Javelin - Good flavoured early scraper. Fairly firm with little discolouration. Matures gracefully to be general purpose with excellent cooking qualities.
Second Earlies –
Maris Peer - Tried and tested boiling/salad potato. Very uniform. Beautiful plant, with remarkable purple flowers. The perfect patio potato!
Wilja - Tried and tested boiling/general purpose potato. The British gardener's favourite second early. High yields of large tubers
Main Crop –
Rooster – This has quickly become a major variety in Ireland, due to its floury texture and delicious. Good for mashing, steaming, roasting, chipping and crisping.
Desiree - Tried and tested boiling/general purpose potato. The world and Britain's favourite red. Drought resistant. Firm with little discolouration. Strong flavour and suitable for a wide range of uses. The TV chef's favourite
Golden Wonders – Heritage flavour. Scotland's favourite premium potato. Floury and dry and intensely tasty. Boiling is difficult, easier to mash, fry, roast or microwave.
Kerr's Pinks – Traditional tasty main crop potato. Dense weed suppressing foliage. Ireland's favourite. General-purpose floury potato. Microwaves, mashes, bakes and fries well. Boiling needs care
King Edward - Heritage general-purpose potato. England's best-known potato. Some say the best roaster ever. Moderately firm. Excellent flavour and texture, suitable for a wide range of uses.
Maris Piper - Tried and tested general purpose potato. Britain's dominant field variety. Some say the best chipper ever. Excellent flavour and texture, suitable for a wide range of uses. Floury and not the easiest to boil but excels otherwise. Chips!
Salads –
Pink Fir Apple - Heritage salad. On the late side and has a very knobbly shape. Only superb flavour can explain its survival over such a long time. Great hot or cold, sliced, diced or whole. Cook in the skin. Peeling is nearly impossible!
Plenty to choose from.
Spacing, depth and row width
Traditional planting distances are:
First Earlies & Second Earlies - Plant 30cm (12in) between tubers, at 10cm (4in) deep. In rows which are 45cm (18in) apart.
Maincrop - Plant 37.5cm (15in) between tubers, at 10cm (4in) deep. In rows which are 67.5cm (27in) apart.
We also have all the compost, manure and topsoil you could need.
Remember you don't need a lot of ground to grow your own potatoes. Try planting them in a bucket or large container on your patio/decking. Just remember to add some gravel to the bottom of the tub for drainage!
