Sandy’s Gardening tips – Autumn.
Sandy’s Gardening tips – Autumn.

Now is the time of year to prune and tidy! Cut hedges and prune shrubs, remember not to prune your winter ones, winter Jasmine, Forsythia, Cornus and Viburnum.
Plant up borders, tubs etc. for winter and spring displays with Bulbs, Pansies, Wallflower, Mysotis, Polyanthus and Sweet William.
Remember to add a few more stones to the bottom of tubs and pots to provide added drainage for winter rains. If you are planting a shrub in a pot add one spade-full of earth to two spade-fulls of compost. This keeps them from drying out to often and makes them heavier , preventing them from blowing over during winter storms.
It is also a good time to patch lawns, either with turf or seed. If seeding, cover seed with a light covering of peat and sand. Remember to fork up the soil in the offending area.
If you have had Non-stop Begonias in your tubs, there is a corm at the base so you can lift and dry them off, then plant in peat in March for lovely plants next year.
Now is also the time to plant Spring Cabbage for Spring Greens.
Lift Carrots, Beetroot and Potatoes now for winter storage.

Happy Gardening

Sandy
